Dancehall hot shot, Tony "Dutty Wine” Matterhorn, is set to heat things up at next weekend’s Irie Jamboree.

Matterhorn, who garnered worldwide notoriety last year with "Dutty Wine" and followed up with "Good Fe Dem," is slated for Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, NY on Labor Day Sunday, September 2, 2007. It will be his first major outdoor gig in the tri-state area and fans are eager to see what he has in store for them.

"Basically I'll say to the fans, be in the park early. Don't let someone have to tell you what Matterhorn came out wearing. Witness it for your self," commented the singer.

Since the 'Man From Mars' kick started his career with "Dutty Wine," he has been in constant demand, recording tracks like "Gully Beans," a reggae song with a down south flava, and "On My Knees" with Alaine. He has also shot a video in Hollywood at Universal Studios with Wyclef Jean, Elephant Man and Sun aka Giesha from Asia for a remix of 'Dutty Wine' titled 'China Wine.'

"Working with Ele and Wyclef in Hollywood was fun. The video shoot went all day and all night…you know how dem tings go. But yea man, we make it fun still, you see it?," reflected Matterhorn.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning has come under criticism after a performance that he witnessed at last weekend's Plymouth Jazz Festival in Tobago.

"I went to Jazz Festival and there I saw Patrick Manning during Sean Paul's performance. He (Paul) came on stage with four dancers in underwear and one of them was doing a dutty wine upside down on her head and Patrick Manning was there smiling his face off. What a hypocrite," Congress of the People activist Capt Gary Griffith said during a political meeting in Freeport on Tuesday night.

"Prime Minister Patrick Manning said (that) when he saw the footage of the lewd dancing at Zen, that never in his life would he want to see something like that again. People have blamed Johnny Soong... Zen... Danah Alleyne... the pastor and everyone else. But the problem lies with one body and that is the Government."

With dance moves that remain the hottest commodity around, Choreographer Tanisha Scott has been blazing trails, and bringing Jamaican dances to the forefront of the world.

While many may not recognise her name, most have seen her in all the hypest music videos such as Sean Paul's We be Burning, and I'm Still In Love With You, Ludacris' Money Maker, Ne-Yo's Stay and countless others.

Born in Toronto, Canada to Jamaican parents, Scott has kept her Jamaican link close to her heart visiting yearly as much as possible.

She exploded on the dance scene with Sean Paul's Gimme Di Light video. It was Scott's first time meeting the then striving DJ and her first time choreographing as well.

"My friend Little X, the director, called me and asked to choreograph it. I was nervous and scared but it worked out. I built my reputation wid Sean, he loved my energy, after that I did all his videos. People saw the video and saw my work, that's how I expanded in the business" she said.

With a vivacious personality, energy and an natural skill at dancing Scott has expanded to work with the Caribbean and United States' biggest artistes such as Beyonc?, Jay-Z, Mary J Blidge, the late Aaliyah, Craig David, Ne-Yo, Mya, Fabulous, Kevin Lyttle, Rupee, Elephant Man, Tami Chynn, Shaggy and many others she was never professionally trained, dancing was something she had always wanted to do.

"From when I was born, I used to tell my mom I wanted to be a belly dancer. I joined a dance troupe in university. I was never professionally trained. I used to dance at this club back home," she said while laughing.

While some have credited Scott with 'bussing' Sean Paul, since it was the Gimme Di Light video that really drew attention to him as an artiste, she says it was just the right time for them both.

She says, "Jamaican dance is a hundred per cent energy, it represents what Jamaica is, the whole Bob Marley One Love free spirit. Anyone can do dancehall, the steps are easy but its the vibe that really carries it off. Everyone from Africa to Japan, Europe are seeing the moves and want to do them. Look at Dutty Wine, everyone from men, to women, children, even my grandmother wants to do it. Its a great phenomenon and a girls dance. Finally the girls have something for them, I rate the Attitude Girls."

Scott just finished co-choreographing the movie Bring It On: All Or Nothing, the fourth movie in the Bring It On series. She also choreographed and starred in How She Moved to be released next year. Scott plays a role not far off her person: a Jamaican girl who moves to Canada and becomes a dancer at her high school.

Despite all her achievements, Scott remembers the moment that inspired her to never stop dancing.

According to Scott, on a visit to Jamaica, dancehall's most famous dancer Bogle came up to her and praised her work. "He told me how I had helped bring dancehall to the forefront, how proud he was of me. That's the greatest thing, no matter what I'm gonna keep opening doors for Jamaican dancers. I want to see a dancehall movement, make a mark. Where you have jazz and tap as dance forms that are studied, I want to bring dancehall to that level, where it is respected and taught, its a culture. Its not about Tanisha but about Jamaica and dancehall" she said.

Tony Matterhorn Celebrates in New York

Not even the pending snow storm could stop the specially invited guests, media and well wishers from coming out in large numbers at Tony Matterhorn’s welcome back party and VIP press reception. The self-styled man from mars celebrated his return to New York after a three year absence, at the trendy Mars 2112 restaurant, nightclub and bar in Manhattan last Tuesday night.

The occasion was hosted by Matterhorn’s management company, VIP Connected. Scores of mainstream and urban media personnel from the US, England, Europe and even Jamaica, were on hand to mark the milestone.

Matterhorn’s US visa was revoked in 2003. His management company with assistance from various entities in the US petitioned for the visa to be reinstated. The loss of the visa had prevented Matterhorn from fulfilling numerous performance obligations in the USA, which resulted from the mainstream success of his muscular Dutty Wine and Goodas Fi Dem singles.

Dutty Wine was heralded by the prestigious urban publication Vibe Magazines as one of the 60 most influential records of 2006. The song enjoyed a runaway success in the US, Europe and in several Caribbean countries. Matterhorn performed in almost every country where the song took off, with the exception of going stateside.

In an earlier interview, Matterhorn had expressed his sentiments about being able to perform in the US again. "I can now reach out to my extended fans, the real Matterhorn fans. It feels good to be able to reunite with them, but in some ways I have been interacting with them on my space a lot," said Matterhorn.

His manager Julie ‘Lexy’ Brooks of VIP Connected said that since the announcement that Mattehorn can once again visit the US, several offers for performances have been popping up. ‘We have a lot of offers on the table right now. He might be traveling to the US almost every weekend just to perform’, said Ms Brooks.

At his welcome back party, Matterhorn greeted the media and spoke about plans for his career. He revealed that a collaboration with himself, Wyclef Jean and Elephant Man (featuring a new female Hispanic singer) is set to be a big hit this summer. He also hinted that he was in negotiations with at least three major US record companies for the release of his debut album.

Rob Kenner, Editor at Large at Vibe magazine told this writer that New Yorkers were familiar with Matterhorn from his days with the King Addies sound system and that his return could further help in capitalizing on opportunities that could come his way. ‘Dutty Wine did very well in the urban market and a lot of mainstream artistes would want to work with him. Now that he is back, many of these opportunities can now bear fruit’, said Kenner.

Singer Suzanne Couch, Linkup Media CEO David ‘Squeeze’ Annakie, Dave Rodney of Jamrock Magazine, Patricia Meschino of Billboard and Skywritings magazine, and Jabba from urban radio station Hot 97 FM and Tempo, were among those in attendance.

After the press reception, an after party took place at the T-NY Club in Manhattan. Matterhorn performed his hits as well as new material. He kept the crowd in stitches with his side splitting humor and anecdotes.

He may not enjoy quite the recall of the 60s TV series stars, but for dancehall fans in the US, selector-turned-deejay Tony Matterhorn may well be their favourite martian.

Selector-turned-DJ Tony Matterhorn returns to the US soon after a three-year absence.

Matterhorn, who shook the dancehall last year with the sizeable hits Dutty Wine and Goodas Fi Dem, enjoys watching cartoons and playing his PST games. "I love the PST games. I have six of them since they came out", he confided in an interview with this writer on Friday night.

Currently in London, Matterhorn recently obtained a work permit, allowing him to travel to and perform in the United States, his first visit since 2003.

In another week's time, his fans, specially invited guests, top hip-hop and R&B stars and the media, will get a chance to meet and greet the self-styled 'Man From Mars ' at a big celebration scheduled to take place at - where else? - MARS 2112, a trendy hot spot in Times Square, New York.

"I didn't get to travel the US for three years. I went in to the US embassy in Jamaica and they cancelled my visa. I have never had a police record in Jamaica or in any other country for that matter," Matterhorn explained. He said that contrary to rumours, he was never involved in any illegal or criminal activity that resulted in the cancellation of his US visa in 2003.

Matterhorn said travelling to the US again will give him the opportunity to rekindle with fans from his sound system days on the Addies disco. "I can now reach out to my extended fans, the real Matterhorn fans. It feels good to be able to reunite with them, but in some ways I have been interacting with them on myspace a lot," said Matterhorn. He added: "Having your own page on myspace.com has given me the ability to link with my fans."

Julie Lexy Brooks, CEO of VIP Connected Entertainment, the agency that handles management, bookings and promotions for Matterhorn, was very instrumental in helping the artiste regain his travel/working privileges to the US. She commented, "First, let me say how really excited I am that Tony now can travel and work in the USA again. I know it was a very, very long wait but fans Stateside will soon be graced with his presence and the opportunity to see him perform live."

Asked how difficult it was to secure Matterhorn's US visa, Ms Brooks said, "It was quite a long and at times tedious task to secure his visa. At times it seemed almost impossible, but we kept the faith. My company first started working with his immigration case a little over 3 years ago. We brought the attorney's office of Spar and Bernstein on board to assist us. They worked hard and for this we would like to thank them for their kind assistance.

We would also like to thank the office of Congressman Gary L Ackerman and the Jamaican Consulate for the role they played as well. But just to be clear, at the end of the day the reality of what Tony has been preaching all this time came to pass, and that is, he has done nothing wrong and he stuck to his argument."

After the New York party, Matterhorn will head back to London to fulfill performance obligations, returning to Jamaica in time for a guest shot on the Jim Brown Memorial dance. His birthday celebrations in March will see him throwing parties in several Caribbean countries. The following month, he commences a tour of Europe, with the. trek culminating with several dates in the US in May.

Asked what became of the publicised interest that Atlantic Records had shown in signing him during the height of the Dutty Wine craze, Matterhorn (real name Dufton Taylor) said, "It was pure politics when it came to my career. I was supposed to do an album but someone foiled the attempt. The delay in Atlantic Records working with me was basically because I didn't have a US visa. But for now, I am only concerned about making hit singles."

Matterhorn recently hit the charts with Man From Mars and Wickedest Ride (featuring Mr. Easy). He is currently working on a slate of singles. He predicts a collaboration with singer Alaine, titled On Your Knees, will be a big hit over the summer. "The song is like a man and woman fuss. It was produced by Daseca.

I also have a song on the Pepper Spray rhythm from DJ Karim. I have always thought about things in a futuristic way. Look at the song Man From Mars. Everything that I said in that song is coming to pass," Matterhorn concluded.

To Ban the Dutty Wine

Tanisha Henry died last week. She had been at what I understand is called a 'school uniform' party in St. Catherine, and had participated in a 'Dutty Wine' competition. The newspapers report that while taking part in this activity, she fell, was hurriedly taken to hospital, and was pronounced dead.
The tragic circumstances of Ms. Henry's death, at age 18, have prompted much grief. The circumstances have also prompted concern, for, it is argued that the Dutty Wine dance was the cause of her death. Against that background, some persons have publicly called for the banning of the Dutty Wine, while others have said that Dutty Wine contests should be prohibited by the Government.
Understandable
The sentiment behind the pro-banning perspective is perfectly understandable. From what I have seen on television, the Dutty Wine is a vigorous, strenuous, whirlwind of a dance, in which the head and other parts of the body are subjected to extraordinary contortions. To the untrained eye, this is something that could well cause bodily harm. I note, though, that at least two medical experts have expressed divergent views on whether the Dutty Wine could possibly have prompted Ms. Henry's death, and the autopsy results are reported by The Gleaner to have been inconclusive.
Should Dutty Wine be banned? First of all, there needs to be some care in assessing cause and effect. A man jogs briskly down the street, collapses and dies. There may be a sense in which the jogging may be said to have caused his death, but this, by itself, would be a far too simplistic conclusion. And the mere fact that the death followed the brisk jog does not mean that the jogging had anything to do with his death: post hoc ergo propter hoc is not really helpful in this case.
So then, before we join the calls for banning Dutty Wine or Dutty Wine contests, we would need to be sure that there is a causal connection between death and the dance. Now, supposing for argument's sake, that this way of moving the body really can produce death or serious bodily harm, should it be banned?
Expression
Dancing is a form of expression. And the state should be slow to ban forms of expression. In fact, without being too legalistic on the point, the Constitution says that everyone is entitled to freedom of expression, a form of words that suggests, on the face of things, that I should be left alone to Dutty Wine all I want. But the Constitution goes further: it allows the state to circumscribe my freedom of expression if, for instance, this is reasonably required "in the interests of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health" or to regulate "public entertainments."
The question then is whether any of these grounds for restriction would apply in the case of the Dutty Wine. Obviously, this dance gives rise to no questions of defence or public safety, and I rather suspect that in most cases, a Dutty Wine will not undermine public order. But what about public morality? This is a tricky category, not least because your general approach to the morality of wining up yourself may well change as you grow older.
The best possibilities, therefore, would be for the dance to be banned as a threat to public health, or as a means of regulating public entertainment. But even these categories are not without problems. On public health, go back to my cause and effect point, for we are not sure how dangerous Dutty Wine may be to the body. And can we really argue that the over-enthusiastic head-spinning in Dutty Wine is inherently more damaging to health than heading a tough football towards the goal, or participating in a regulated boxing fight? As to public entertainment, we should note that this would not allow the banning of Dutty Wine per se, but it might allow a ban on Dutty Wine contests.
But, you know, even if the law could be used to ban the dance or the contests, I have mixed feelings. The state should be reluctant to interfere with individual, personal activity, and should only do so where this activity is unquestionably harmful to others or to the society. I would need to know more about the real medical effects of Dutty Wine before I could support a state ban. But, in the meantime, I would discourage those around me from Dutty Wining.

Dutty Wine Show Banned in British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands government has banned a “Dutty Wine” show featuring Jamaican DJ and song writer Tony Matherhorn.

The show was scheduled for this weekend but Chief Minister Dr. Orlando Smith said over the past several days, he and his ministerial colleagues had been inundated with telephone calls "from an overwhelmingly high number of concerned citizen of the public, young and old," about the weekend show.

Dr. Smith said the government would not allow the weekend performance of that show and that the decision came after meetings between the promoters and the Chief Minister’s Office.

According to Dr. Smith, the government required application process to hold the show was incomplete and he was also concerned about the life-threatening consequences associated with the dance.

As a result the decision was made to ban the show.

Really now, whats up with that. The people in the British Virgin Islands need to chill out, the dutty wine controversy continues once again

Dutty Wine Death from Last Year

It happened a few months ago, but in an attempt to highlight everything dutty wine, we will revisit the case of the dance of death.

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:
The popular "Dutty Wine" dance is being blamed for yesterday's death of an 18-year-old St. Catherine woman.
Tanisha Henry was attending a 'school uniform' party at Beacon Hill, Thompson Pen, about four o' clock Sunday morning when, while doing the popular dance, she collapsed and was rushed to the nearby Spanish Town Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
When The Gleaner checked with the institution, a representative said persons have for some time been warned of the dangers associated with the dance, but that no one seems to have taken heed.
In March, The Star reported warnings from doctors that the 'Dutty Wine' was a dangerous dance that could cause serious neck injury and lifelong pain.
Residents in shock
The dance, done mainly by women, involves the rapid rotation of the neck and posterior simultaneously.
"If you throw the body in extreme positions, as in the case of the 'Dutty Wine', you could have muscle trauma, damage to your ligaments and shifting in bones," Dr. Jephthath Ford, general practitioner, told The Star.
In the Beacon Hill area, where yesterday's incident occurred, several persons said they were shocked by what had happened.
"It is a warning to young people that dem mus stop du de Dutty Wine," said one woman who called the incident a curse on the land. "Is like a demon sen' from de pit a hell dat is taking the lives of the youth even before dem have time to repent."
Yesterday Tanisha's mother, Linda Henry, said she was still in shock.
"I was at home about 4 o'clock when I feel like something is wrong with Tanisha as I did not see her when she came from work last night," she said. "About half an hour after, I got the news that she was dancing Dutty Wine and collapse."
Ms. Henry said that, on going to the hospital, her worst fear was realised when the doctor told her that her daughter was dead as a result of the dance. She added that it was a very sad moment and that Tanisha, who works at a pharmacy, was her last child. She said she did not know how the family would cope with her death.
The Spanish Town police are conducting a routine investigation into the matter.

Welcome to the dutty wine blog, your informational resource for everything dutty wine. This blog was developed due to the overwhelming popularity of the dance that has the world going crazy.

The uninitiated may ask what is the dutty wine dance? The dance originated in Jamaica and was made popular by the accompanying song, Dutty Wine by Tony “Mentally Ill” Matterhorn. The catchy combination of song and dance allowed it to be the dance craze of 2006 for Jamaica. There are many variations to the dutty wine, but the most common is women with long hair spinning their head in a continuous circle, while doing the butterfly (moving your legs in, out, in both in. unision).

The Dutty Wine is not without its share of controversy. When the song was first released the lyrical content came under fire from various segments of society. Critics claimed that the song and accompanying dance promoted overt sexual moves and positions, which were quickly imitated by the many children who gravitated to the dance and song.

The second controversy started early when the dance came out. There were reports going around that stated that a woman had died from a broken neck doing the dutty wine. This was never confirmed and this was widely known as a myth as no one had any proof. This sadly changed in October of 2006 when a young 18 year old woman, Tanisha Henry, died of injuries sustained while doing the dutty wine dance. This once again thrust the thing called dutty wine to the forefront of people’s tongues.
